How much paternity leave does EU law give?

Fathers, or equivalent second parents where national law recognises them, are entitled to 10 working days of paternity leave around the birth of a child. It must be paid at least at the level of national sick pay.

The right does not depend on how long the person has worked, although payment may require up to six months of prior employment.

Directive (EU) 2019/1158 (Work-Life Balance Directive), Article 4, Article 8 · European Commission and the national labour authorities
